Environmental Data Analysis

The SWE has carried out many power performance measurements for research and development. These measurements are enabled by SWE’s expertise in atmospheric and structural measurements, and portable data collection systems.

The SWE can measure wind turbine and wind plant inflow with ground-based and turbine-mounted lidar, drones, and in-situ met masts.

These skills allow the measurement of load and power performance curves of wind energy turbines according to IEC standards 61400-12 and 61400-13. The SWE usually conducts these measurements together with an accredited test institute.

Measurements from surface-based remote sensing devices and from masts have been analysed at IMK-IFU of KIT. The following results have an impact on wind energy generation:

  • Marine boundary-layer structure based on measurements at the FINO1 mast in the German North Sea. Part of the results will be used for an enhancement of turbulence parameterizations in mesoscale wind field models. This is task of VERITAS as work package 5 in OWEA. [1-3]
  • Interrelation between wind and waves. [4]
  • Low-level jets (from SODAR measurements)
  • Influence of orography on the vertical wind profile measured by SODAR. [5]
