Together with the University of Stuttgart we are taking on the new English Abitur Schwerpunkt On the Move – Migration and Cross-Cultural Encounters with a series of events that examine the American short stories from different perspectives. We kicked off our series in 2023 with online talks which are still available to watch on our YouTube channel @DAZStuttgart. This fall we want to discuss another interesting aspect to help you introduce the topic in the classroom.

This workshop will investigate a variety of short fictional texts dealing with the topic of migration, and explore in what ways this genre may be used to promote literary and cultural dimensions of foreign language learning. As a starting point, current didactic approaches and curricular links will be discussed to specify and locate the engagement with short fiction in the context of teaching English. Building on that, we will look at different types of narratives (short story, comic, graphic novel, digital story) to reflect on concrete approaches and task formats for classroom use.
